If you’re considering seeing the Carlsbad Flower Fields, don’t overthink it because time is running out. This isn’t one of those things adventures available at any time. The flowers bloom once a year from early March to early May, so get your tickets now! We made a day of it and drove down from Los Angeles and it was a fun, easygoing experience with some surprise activities. Between the views, the photo opportunities, and the chance to just get out of the city and relax a little, it’s well worth the 90 Minute drive (including traffic). You will find something for people of all ages at the Carlsbad Flower Fields. Here’s what you need to know about your visit.
Why the Carlsbad Flower Fields Are Worth a Visit
Every spring, 50 acres of Ranunculus flowers bloom across a hillside in Carlsbad, California. They are arranged by color, and the photo opportunities are just limitless. They have several sculptures and art pieces throughout the property for you to enjoy – several of them positioned within the flowers, so there will likely get that perfect photo. But, it’s not just a pretty place to take pictures. The Carlsbad Flower Fields has fun activities for people of all ages. We rode the Tractor Wagon for an additional $8 and finished the day by sluicing for gemstones.

Things to Do at the Carlsbad Flower Fields
Sluicing for Stones – $5 Well Spent
The flowers are definitely the main attraction, but there’s a surprising amount to do while you’re here. If you want to turn your visit into a full experience, consider adding these activities to your day.
At the Carlsbad Mining Company booth, you can sluice for polished stones—yes, like old-school gold panning, but way easier and with guaranteed stones. For $5, you get a bag of sand and a spot at the water troughs. As you rinse the sand away, you reveal smooth, colorful stones.
People of all ages were enjoying this, and the people working there were very friendly and explained how to sluice and named the stones we uncovered. We walked away with several polished stones as keepsakes. It was actually my favorite part of the day!
Flower Crown Workshops
Make your own flower crown using blooms grown right there on-site. It’s a nice hands-on way to feel part of the place, and the workshops are timed so you can book them into your visit without too much stress. These do sell out, so grab a reservation in advance if this is your vibe. See the Calendar of Events for details.
Yoga Among the Flowers
On select dates, the Flower Fields offer morning yoga classes surrounded by blooms. A few of the options include Flower Flow Yoga, Sunrise Sculpt, and Sound Bath Healing sessions. Bring your own mat, show up a little early, and start your day with something peaceful. See the Calendar of Events for details.
Ride the Tractor Wagon
For an extra fee, you can hop aboard a wagon hitched to a tractor for a slow, bumpy ride around the fields’ edge—and honestly, it’s a must. There’s just something delightfully nostalgic about a wagon ride we couldn’t resist. The elevated view gives you a sweeping look at the fields, and if you glance up, there’s even a view of the ocean. Plus, we were able to be dropped off at the top of the fields, saving us a bit of the walk.

Sunset Wine Tastings & Pop-Up Picnics

If you time your visit right, you can end your day with wine tastings and live music on the grounds. These events happen on select evenings and include small bites from local vendors. The sunsets, flowers in the background, and a glass of wine in hand is a pretty great way to spend time with friends and loved ones. Note: You cannot bring in outside alcohol at any time.
There are also pre-set picnic experiences available that include a cute setup and wagon rides. Great for couples, small groups, or anyone who wants a more relaxed and elevated way to experience the fields. Separate ticket needed: See the Calendar of Events for details.

Getting There: Easy Day Trip Options
Carlsbad is about 90 minutes from Los Angeles and about 40 minutes from San Diego, making it a solid choice for a California day trip. It’s also a great pit stop if you’re road-tripping between LA and San Diego.
The Flower Fields are located right off the I-5 freeway, at 5704 Paseo Del Norte, Carlsbad, CA 92008. Free parking available. If you want to keep the day going after your visit, there are beaches, restaurants, and small shops nearby—Carlsbad Village is only a few minutes away and makes a great lunch or coffee stop or end the day with a perfect California sunset. But, there is enough to do on site that we didn’t feel the need to do anything else before getting back on the road to head home.
Time Is Running Out—Don’t Miss It
Remember, the flowers have a short viewing window each spring, and once they’re gone, that’s it until next year. The season typically wraps in early May, so if you’re planning a visit, don’t wait until the very end. Weather, crowds, and bloom cycles can shift things quickly. As of right now, the last day to buy tickets online for the 2025 season is Sunday, May 11th. So if you’re looking for an easy, low-stress day out factor, get your tickets now!
